What I learned in Practicum

This year in practicum was not like the past fall semester, but I did learn different aspects of practicum. I went to the news show and got more hands on experience with different jobs like camera and teleprompter. I learned how to upload the script and having to go at a steady speed for teleprompter so that the anchor can read it without problem. Learning how to work the studio cameras was a big part. I learned how to focus the cameras and zooming and the different shots so the anchor is balanced in the shot. One big thing I learned this year was editing. I had no knowledge at all about editing and this year I did a lot of it. It was something I found difficult and still do some what but I really want to master it next semester in practicum. It's an essential tool to learn in this field and I must get better. Last year I couldn't make it to any news shows last semester because I had a class that was the same time as the show. I'm going to try to make it to almost every show next year and learn even more. Also this year was more writing readers than last semester, and I didn't know how I felt about it but after a few weeks, but then I noticed that i was getting better at writing them. I also didn't just do one sport to write on, I made sure I wrote about many sports including, Tennis, Basketball, baseball, and lacrosse. Next year in practicum I want to do more filming packages. Filming swimming last semester was a really enjoyable experience and I want more of those moments in practicum next year. Filming certain sports that I enjoy along with sports I am not familiar with so I know the different styles of shooting. Next year I want to be more involved with the news show, and learn a lot more jobs and not just do them once but more and more until I am comfortable with it. With two years of communications in college under my belt there are definitely some things I need to work on. I need to work on my time management whether its blogging hours or finishing packages there is no excuses I need to get better. Another thing is I want to soak in as much information as possible and really pay attention to detail. Next year will be a make or break year for me and determining if I can succeed. I want to succeed but I have to back it up as well. I can't just go through the motions anymore  I have to really work hard and be determined to thrive in broadcast journalism. Next year i'm going to give practicum all I have and try to really be a student that wants to make a difference in the department through practicum and through fall semester.

  1. Mason, it does concern me that you weren't as involved with practicum as you needed to be. If this is what you want to do, this is your opportunity. You also could have been practicing your skills from Intro to Broadcast by shooting and editing some sports.

Your blog entries--as well as your final entry--are terribly late. This cannot continue. Next semester, I will not count any blog hours that are entered late.
